Halloween approaches

We started our costume preparations for Halloween today. We had already picked up Bean's Ninja Turtle costume in Calgary but had been unsuccessful in finding a "bat" costume for Schmoo. Leave to her to pick something completely different and therefore difficult to pick up off the rack. She picked the wrong mother for this one.....Auntie E would have been far more able to create a fantastic costume from scratch.

Well, during our shopping time together on Thursday after school, Schmoo and I scoured Wal-Mart for some black fabric for her wings. With no success at Wal-Mart, we managed to find a black pashima at the accessory store that appeared to be the perfect size. We also found a black headband to which I planned to affix ears. Today's discussion about the costume was not a good one. Her initial thoughts on what we had purchased were negative. I tried to assure her that she would look like a bat and so we headed home after our church and lunch date to try and put it together. I think it was a success. With her face painted black and a leap in the air, here she is in full bat motion!!
Last night we played catch up on Papa's birthday celebrations. He was away this week for work, so we couldn't celebrate properly on his actual birthday. I opted for a house party (saving the babysitter money to pay for snacks and beverages instead) with 14 of our closest friends. The kids cooperated and went to bed on schedule at 7pm and the guests began arriving shortly afterwards. It was a great evening. Lots of food, drinks and laughter. And we were still cleaned up and in bed by 12:30am. The men got to enjoy the high definition experience, watching the Calgary vs Edmonton hockey game, while the women hung out in the kitchen. We didn't keep the neighbours up, by any means, but one set that we invited snuck in for a last minute visit at 11pm as we were wrapping things up.

We've got another busy week ahead. Schmoo isn't back to skipping until Friday as the older kids have been away this weekend at a training camp. She's been hard at work in our dining room though with her skipping rope, trying to perfect her heel-toe moves. Of course we'll be busy getting ready for Halloween and month end for Mama on the weekend.
