Summer....at last

The summer heat arrived today and promises to continue to warm up over the next few days.  After a busy Monday at work and summer camp, the kids and I welcomed a lazy day of summer living.  It didn't turn out to be very lazy, but the pace was perfect.

The morning consisted of a trip to the hair salon for Schmoo.  She has been asking for her hair to be cut for a few weeks now, ever since I suggested she cut it off for the summer.  We had to wait until after the skipping show to ensure it was long enough for a good set of french braids.  But as her head coach commented today when we ran into her after the cut, it is still french braid-able.  We were one of the hair salon's first customers and although she looked miserable as her hair was being cut, she was full of smiles with the end result.

After a full cart of groceries and an early lunch, Bean and I dropped Schmoo off for her first day of skipping camp.  Some of the senior skippers are running a 2-hour camp every day this week for little kids (and the junior skippers) to come and learn some skipping moves.  Schmoo was excited to see one of her buddies and show off her new hairdo.  We returned a couple of hours later and headed up the hill to the local spray park where we met a whole bunch of friends - some planned and some not.  The usual suspects C & H were their with their mom and my friend A and her daughters G & L and husband M joined the party.  Little G had been at the skipping camp too and was all excited to be hanging out with Schmoo, the big kid.  Schmoo did a great job of including her in her spray park exploits.  The afternoon was leisurely and suddenly it was 5:00pm and time to head home for dinner.

We returned to Papa fresh off his World Cup game viewing and he busied himself with the kids setting up the tent on the back deck for the kids to play in this week.  It included a promise that he would sleep in it with them on the weekend too.  After a quiet bedtime, it has been nice to enjoy a quiet dinner just the two of us (with Airlie too) on the front deck, watching the sun go down.  Thank you summer....we've been waiting a long time for you to get here.  We hope you'll stay for awhile.

PS - Bean is officially hooked on soccer.  Uncle C sent a mini World Cup ball to Bean at the beginning of the competition and we can't keep him off the ball.  He spends most of his time at home dribbling and shooting the ball around the house, complete with commentary on which player (Messi, Kaka, Rooney, Diego Forehead) is scoring and which team (always the correct connection) is winning.  He's a boy after his Papa's heart!
