Thankfully he was full of snuggles today. We had a great final weekend of summer. Quiet night in on Friday night to watch Hot Tub Time Machine. Saturday was a bike riding day.....a big ride in the morning for Schmoo and I with her friend J and mom and then another ride in the afternoon for Schmoo while I went for a run down by the lake. I got a night out with a couple of skipping moms on Saturday night, talking skipping politics! Sunday was family time. We packed up the van with our camping gear and headed over the orange bridge to our friend's house for the night. First we headed out for a little hike down to a big waterfall and a mini-campfire on the beach.
We returned home to greet the third family that joined us for the backyard campout. It was the fun of tenting with the luxury of home for meals and bathrooms! The kids had a great time racing around together, while the adults (and french nanny) made dinner and sat by the fire. K was determined to have a true campfire cook-out, wrapping up the veggies and cooking them under the embers of the fire. It took some time...okay a lot of time....but they turned out okay, even if they were a bit crunchy in the end. The kids managed to settle down eventually and we had some adult time back by the fire before calling it a night. Schmoo ended up waking up and coming inside to sleep with me for the night, which was probably for the best since we only had our little tent.
We had a big pancake, eggs and bacon breakfast this morning as a group and then returned home for a quiet day. Schmoo came with me to work for an hour and then we did some last minute back-to-school shopping for some new pants and indoor shoes. Papa served up a great shrimp skewer supper and the kids fell fast asleep at 7pm when we tucked them in.
My brain is already whirling around about how to tackle the after school, bedtime craziness that I'm expecting this month as we adjust to a new schedule. A busy week ahead, of course. Schmoo and Papa are back on the soccer field tomorrow night for practice and then both kids will play on Saturday. Work will keep me busy for a few days, but I'm sure Friday will seem very strange when I drop them both off and have the whole day to myself!
