Grade One Open House

Week two at Grade One has drawn to a close. Despite Schmoo's "coughs" and lower energy level in the mornings, she's had a great week. Wednesday was a bit of a struggle to get her going and off to school, but once we were walking down the hill to the schoolyard, she told me she was feeling much better. When I came up the hill at lunchtime to check on her after I finished work, she was huddled under porch with her Grade 4 big buddies. They had just finished "running club" which consists of running around the block a couple of times. The big girls were all impressed that Schmoo had done two laps when last year the Grade One kids had only done one! So obviously she was fine. We're still waiting for the fall activities (otherthan soccer) to get started. Bean starts gymnastics on Monday and we're waiting for a call from the skipping club with the go ahead to start coming to their practices.

The week ended with the school's Kick Off BBQ and Open House. We headed back to the school with our tray of sprinkle rice krispie squares and enjoyed a hot dog / smokie and potluck supper in the playground. The event is absolute mayhem with all the kids running around with eachother. I did manage to get the kids to sit down for 10 minutes to eat their dinners before they resumed play with all their friends. Even Bean was happy running around with a bunch of the kindergarten kids that he knows from preschool last year.

After the feeding frenzy, we headed into the school to check out Schmoo's classroom. It was an opportunity for Papa to meet Schmoo's teacher and for Schmoo to show off her desk and all the exciting things inside. She has her own pencil box, full of pencil crayons and crayons. A September poem book and various other workbooks and binders. We managed to get a picture of her with her deskmate J (who she subsequently had a playdate with today after they finished playing soccer). Leave it to Schmoo to make a crazy face. We wrapped things up and returned our tired and cranky kids home to bed.

Schmoo has successfully passed along her back to school cold to me, so I'm now suffering with a clogged head. Today has been slow for me because of it. We did make it down to the soccer fields for Schmoo's game at 10am. Her energy is still not 100% and she was pretty distracted on the field. She did manage a couple of good bursts of energy, but she wasn't her usual run to the net self. She headed off with J after the game for a playdate and Bean headed home with us. It was quiet time in the afternoon and Bean finally managed to have a big snooze. Poor guy, he runs on the same schedule as Schmoo and I'm sure his little body needs a big catch up on the weekends. The rainclouds rolled in, so while I got myself organized for Sunday School tomorrow, the kids got to watch a movie.

Another busy weekend day tomorrow. Church in the morning and a birthday party at the pool for Schmoo in the afternoon. Lucky Mama gets a movie date with a friend in the evening to go and see "Julie and Julia".....a real treat as chick flicks are few and far between in this town!
