Super Bowl Sunday

It only comes once a year. The day when Papa sits down on the couch and insists on watching a whole game of American football. He used to do it when he lived in England, but at least in Canada he gets to watch at a reasonable hour of 3pm instead of the middle of the night. Last year we invited some friends over to watch too and we invited the same friends back today. It ended up being a whole day spent together. The kids started the day at their friend H's 4th birthday party. OK, they didn't start their day at the party. Their day started at 6am, as per usual and the party didn't start until 11am, so there was a big chunk of time where they got to watch TV and eat breakfast snacks on the couch so their Mama could sleep in and their Papa could watch soccer. They also got all dressed up and wrapped up their presents for H. Schmoo was determined to wrap hers all by herself. Very focussed.

With the kids both at the birthday party, we were able to enjoy a nice breakfast out with our friends C & K, whose kids were at the same birthday party. What a treat to eat and enjoy adult conversation in the middle of the day! We made a pit stop at the car wash on the way to pick up the kids. It was well overdue for a clean up and when K told us that his daughter had recognized our van because it was red and dirty, I knew for sure that it was time to get the car washed.

We brought our sugar hyped kids home for a very short quiet time before C & K showed up with their two kids. All four kids played together for a bit until C took her daughter to another birthday party, leaving poor Schmoo without a playmate for a few hours. The afternoon went well. Bean and S found a good groove with one another and played well together most of the afternoon. They did however make the most of their unsupervised time in Bean's room, managing to put every toy, book and piece of clothing onto the floor. At least they were willing participants to help me clean it up. I was quick to realize how many tiny pieces of Lego that Bean now owns. C came back from her birthday party so Schmoo got to enjoy some playtime too before the game finished and they headed home.

It meant a later night for the kids, but they both went to bed happy for a fun filled day. Tomorrow will be a long day for everyone. No work for Mama, but a full day at school for the kids so that I can go skiing for the day! The snow has started to gently fall, so hopefully that means some fresh tracks on the hill in the morning! What a great start to my birthday week.
