Grandma Lady and her friend L arrived late yesterday. They are on a girls road trip and have made our home a pit stop for the next couple of nights. The kids were excited to see them, of course. And Schmoo was even more excited as Grandma Lady will be bunking in with her while they are here. We had a lovely soup dinner for four after the kids were in bed to catch up on the adventures that Lady and L have been on so far on their trip.
Today held some other big things. It was the kids' official last day at daycare. They were excited about taking a gift bag of goodies and their homemade cards of thanks for the teachers. We were sure to get a parting picture with each of their most beloved teachers. I spent the morning at the gym, burning some energy before coming home to say good-bye to Emma. While Papa and Grandma Lady were out, I also had the pleasure of visiting one of our rental properties where the plumber had just finished visiting to repair a significant leak in the downstairs ceiling. He cut away a big piece of the ceiling to repair the pipe and now we get to sort out cleaning up the wet mess and repairing the ceiling. Yuck!
The afternoon was a bit more enjoyable. L took Grandma Lady and I out for lunch at the lakefront patio. The weather is definitely cooler today, but it was still sunny and warm enough to sit outside. They headed off on a new adventure and I ran some errands in town before heading back home to enjoy 1/2 hour of reading my book before going back to the rental house with Papa to do the annual inspection that we had actually scheduled earlier in the week. It's amazing to think that we are going into the 3rd year as landlords. Thank goodness we have lucked into some good tenants so far. We picked the kids up from daycare and said their good-byes. Back at home, Papa headed out for a birthday party soccer game and I got the kids fed and organized for bed. The house is quiet now and I plan to snuggle up on the couch and watch a movie to pass the night away.
We did tell the kids that Emma had gone to heaven tonight. At first they didn't seem to bothered. They were more concerned about playing their Go Fish game. But I think it started to sink in with Schmoo later on as she asked a few more questions and said that she was going to miss Emma. The ache in my heart isn't quite as heavy now as it was earlier in the day. I've spent lots of time looking up to the sky thinking about how Emma is now quietly settled at the feet of Grandpa Frank, happy. We love you Emma and will miss you.
