It is easy to forget that little people can only do so much. As the kids get older, I find myself trying to squeeze too many things into one day on too many of an occasion. Today was a perfect example. By the time we returned from our adventures of the day the kids were over tired and I was exhausted. All I could focus on was getting them in the house (with the attached temper tantrums) and into their rooms for quiet time. It wasn't a quick process. They both had different demands - Bean to eat the rest of his lunch and clean up his toys, Schmoo to clean up her toys from the morning. It made more sense to let them finish their business than to fight them into their rooms.
But I'm jumping ahead. We had an early start this morning. Schmoo was up at 5:45am...far too early for a busy day. Bean wasn't far behind her. We spent the next hour trying to negotiate them back into their rooms to play quietly. So the day started without shows (which resulted in a meltdown ala Schmoo). They were soon distracted and running around playing their organizing games. I had some extra time, since I was up so early, to get things together for our day. We made it to the gym early, so that both kids had a space in the daycare and I had lots of time for exercise. I added a set of risers to my step today, so got a much more intense workout...probably a contributing factor to my tiredness level later in the day.
After the gym we drove out of town 20 minutes to go and say good-bye to K and Baby A. We only got to peek in on Baby A as he was having a nap while we were there, but the kids had a great time entertaining K and her extended family for 1/2 hour. It was nice to see them one last time and both kids gave her a huge hug good-bye. Schmoo had even coloured K a picture at the gym. Papa got a quick visit with them too when he met them at the airport to pick up the car seat I had borrowed for them to use.
Next stop at the junction for a muffin for the kids and a wrap for Mama to get us through lunch. We then carried on to Schmoo's kindergarden school where they were having a preschool event to showcase the school and talk about getting your children ready for kindergarden. Our friends C & H were there, so the kids were excited to see them. We came home with lots of goodies, including a felt house game which resulted in Bean's meltdown as we only got one set and he didn't want to share with Schmoo and vice versa.
We did manage to have some quiet time. Bean slept, despite me leaving his toys in his room and saying he could leave the light on. Schmoo didn't and proceeded to come out of her room while I was trying to revive some energy in my own bed. Papa came home and after the kids' supper, I headed out to do some grocery shopping before going out for dinner with two girlfriends for one of their birthdays. It was nice to get out and not have to participate in bedtime tonight. My patience level was low, so a good time for Papa to take the reins.
Our travel plans are in place for the rest of this week. We'll head out on Thursday for our monster road trip. It will be nice to see a few friends in Cowtown when we pass through and of course to see some family up in Edmonton. Another busy day tomorrow to get organized for our trip.
