I'm committed to this year being Schmoo's learn to ski winter. We had a couple days out last winter, but I didn't get into the swing of it and so neither did she. It was kind of an in-between year. She was 4.5 years old and five was the age I had set in my mind that I wanted her to start skiing. I listened to many of her friends' parents last year talk about how they had their kids out skiing and already this year I hear them talking about their skiing plans. So I'm determined.
This weekend was to be our first outing. I had wanted to get out over the Christmas break, but this nasty cold has held me back. We had started to talk about going on Friday. I got her ski boots out of the back shed and was pleased to see that they still fit. Schmoo started asking several times a day when we could go skiing. Yesterday was a write-off with the sub-zero temperatures and I had expected today to be the same. But after a successful trip to church this morning, I decided to pull up my ski socks, suck up my "I'm feeling sick" attitude and get her up to the hill. After a scrumptious lunch a la Papa, I packed up the van and up the mountain we went.
The outing started out poorly. I drove up to the lodge to drop off our skis, in hopes of finding a close parking spot and when I went to turn around, I backed into another van's bumper. Lucky for me the other driver wasn't concerned about the peeling paint on his bumper...."it's been like that for ages" he said....and we were able to carry on without incident. Schmoo did great. We went up and down the rope tow about five times. A couple of times she even rode the rope tow on her own. She wasn't ready to let go of riding between my legs though. The power of suggestion won her out when she heard another parent announce "two more runs and we'll got in for hot chocolate". So into the lodge we went. We had a lovely hot chocolate and french fry break and she was keen to head out for another couple of runs. She was excited to see her friend M on the hill. Peer pressure always being a good motivator. Our last run down was great. I let go of the pole and she cruised a little bit without my assistance. We talked about her going for a lesson and she seemed keen, so next week's Sunday afternoon will likely involve a private lesson to jump start her skiing.
We returned home to a quiet house. Papa cooked up a wonderful rack of lamb and roast squash dinner that we devoured after watching all of "Meet the Robinsons". Bean was happy to have his Mama home to snuggle up on the green chair to watch the movie. It's an early night here tonight. We're back to the grind tomorrow so wanting to get the kids on track with a good night's sleep. My cold seems to be doing okay. Still a lingering sinus ache, but hopefully my commitment #2 of getting back on my exercise plan will clear things up.
On a side note - Schmoo had a great talk with Nana on the phone today. It's so cute to listen to her chatter away on the phone now. She takes it right away and sits in her room talking until she's done.

Wishing you many happy skiing adventures to come. You won't regret the private lesson! Wish I could have been the instructor. Miss you all.
I remember your first ski day at Fortress Mama Schmoo&Bean. I am not surprised that Schmoo likes to ski. Wishing you both many runs!
