I remember when Bean was born, Schmoo suddenly wasn't a baby anymore. Overnight she grew up and went from this little person to a big person. Today was another one of those moments. It was kindergarden orientation day today. I picked Schmoo up from daycare after lunch and we went to her new school. She spent an hour and a half with her teacher and her new classmates and I got to spend the time upstairs with the principal and the other parents. She hesitated a little bit when I went to leave her downstairs, but her face was brave and she whispered "I love you" to me as I stood up to walk away. When I returned from the parent meeting, she was full of smiles and excited to show me the caterpillar she had made as a craft. As we left the school, I took her picture along the fence to the playground. She watched as the other kids played and asked whether she would get to come back tomorrow. There was such disappointment in her voice when I told her she would have to wait until September. When I got home today and downloaded the picture from the fence, I was amazed at how suddenly grown up she looks, my little girl.
The rest of the day was busy. Gym in the morning. A great phone conversation with my friend L way over in Boston. Kindergarden in the afternoon and then some errands after I returned Schmoo to daycare. Papa was at an all day meeting which went into the evening, but we did manage to cross paths a couple of times at home during the day when he was dropping things off. The kids returned from daycare exhausted and cranky, which was no surprise. Sushi dinner, Babar and a quick bath. Both kids settled quickly. Bean hasn't napped for three days now so his little body was ready for a big sleep.
My evening was eventful. I didn't expect Papa back early, but he returned around 8pm, at the same time as my friend D, who I had invited over to watch a movie with me. I was busy in the kitchen making myself a gourmet risotto dinner, talking on the phone to Grandma Lady when they both arrived. Papa chose to spend the rest of the evening out in the garden, leaving D and I to chat and then watch "Lars and the Real Girl" - a cute, quirky comedy/drama.
