Yesterday Auntie E and I did the Skype thing with our kids for the first time. Bean and Cousin I, especially, thought it was great. They just gazed at each other and giggled for the most part. Both of our kids are fairly avid phone talkers. They are almost always up for a quick chat to whoever is on the phone and today was no exception. In my daily conversation with Auntie E, both Schmoo and Bean got a chance to chat with Cousin I. I managed to capture Bean's conversation with her in photos. His expressions are great. They mostly ask each other one or two questions and then there's lots of silence before one of the Mamas takes the phone back. But is sure is cute to listen to them try to have a conversation.
Bean's trains seem to have made a reappearance this week. His big blue box of trains has sat dormant for months in his room. But suddenly they are back in action in the dining room area. Both yesterday and today he has requested assistance setting up a 'big track' and then spent ages pushing his trains around. It's lovely to hear him chattering away, talking for and to the different trains. Schmoo is always up for helping with the construction of the track, but isn't into playing with the trains. This is probably a good thing because invariably when she does get involved, they want to go in opposite directions so someone gets derailed and Mama has to intervene.
Our Friday was pretty laid back. The kids were up at the crack of dawn. Their usual 6am which is great Monday to Thursday, but seems awful on Friday when we don't have to be out of bed until 7 - 7:30am. We headed to Schmoo's school in time for her to play on the playground before the school bell. I was officially snubbed for the first time. Sniff. Schmoo went running into the school yard, dropped her backpack at the kindergarten door and immediately ran off with her friend M. I called to her to say good-bye and she half turned and half waved good-bye and then was off. No more last one kiss and hugs for Mama.
Today was also Cowboy Day at her school. She had compiled her outfit earlier in the week, getting ready just like her Papa does when he goes away for work. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but her outfit was comprised of her striped multi-colour summer dress with a pink long sleeved shirt with hearts all over it, a light teal coloured vest (because cowboys wear vests) and my Australian cowboy hat. Oh, and her regular dress up shoes. So, although being ready for probably three days, suddenly this morning she started to get cold feet. She kept asking me if I was SURE it was Cowboy Day. In fact even told me that I was lying at one point. Then when we parked outside the school, she hesitated in the car, sure that she couldn't see any other kids dressed up. Finally she spotted another cowboy hat and then started to see some kids from her class arriving in full cowboy gear. As we walked to the school yard, she decided that she didn't need the vest, but put the hat on and went running.
Bean and I had a nice morning. We went to the gym, of course and then spent an hour up on the main street at the local kids shop and dollar store. Bean loves the kids' shop because they have two Thomas the Tank Engine tables set up. He played for 15 minutes while looked for a new baby gift and then we carried on to another couple of shops before heading back to pick up Schmoo. We returned home for lunch and quiet time. I went into town during quiet time, leaving the kids with Papa, for a volunteer meeting and then returned to relieve Papa so he could go to our rental house to do his drywall work. The kids had dinner and ran around playing and were in the bath when he returned.
The kids had an early night, so I'm anticipating another early morning. I went out to get a movie and returned to Papa in the kitchen with his sous chef making us a steak and potatoes dinner. We've had a quiet evening watching "The Love Guru" with Mike Meyers. It felt good to have something funny to laugh out loud about.
