Weekend Update

We're home and we're tired. All of us. Even Schmoo. Tonight's bedtime was short and sweet. No one was listening, so there were no stories. Mama was tired and very very hungry after missing lunch and then experiencing a delay at the go between airport, so my mood was not a patient one with two over tired, over excited children. Schmoo took a while to settle tonight too, obviously happy to be back at home.

The weekend was a succesful one. Sounds like Schmoo had a good time out in the valley with Auntie E and the gang. The first night was tough. Auntie E found her sobbing on the guest bed, looking at pictures of us. But I think most of that was just being exhausted from being at daycare all day. Schmoo told me tonight that she cried the first night, but was excited the second night. Sounds like she did good listening and had fun. She was very excited to see us pull up tonight when we finally got to Auntie E's house from the airport. We ended up being delayed by an hour due to mechanical issues.

Our trip to the Island was good. It's fun to have some one on one time with Bean. He was very excited about going on two planes, one bus and a car ride on the first day. He travelled well and was most patient when we had to wait at the passport office for an hour and a half to renew our passports. Especially after we had just been travelling all morning. We got it done though, so there should be new passports arriving for Papa, Schmoo and Bean in the middle of April.
Bean had a good time interacting with all the other Champs this weekend. Seal came along for the trip and was a real ice breaker. Seal talked to lots of the other kids and enjoyed wrestling with some other stuffies at the play and learn session on Saturday morning. Papa and I had some good conversations with several other families too. The mood wasn't always great. It was a busy weekend and so cranky Bean came out to play on a couple of occasions. I was lucky enough to catch one time when he was insistent on going back upstairs instead of waiting for Papa.

The most interesting experience for me was watching Bean's reaction to one of the older kids removing his prosthetic leg at the play and learn session. Bean just couldn't figure it out. He was stunned for about 10 minutes. He just kept looking and trying to ask where his leg had gone. The older boy handled it great though. He was one of the peer mentors and was able to talk to Bean about them being similar. I think it was a real eye opening moment for Bean, who still probably didn't link the fact that he has a little arm, just like this boy has a little leg. Other than that situation, Bean didn't seem phased by anyone else's missing limbs. He ran around with lots of little boys, including one boy that ran around on his two leg stumps.

We managed to enjoy the hotel room too. Bean thought it was a real novelty getting to sleep with his Mama and Papa. The first night, I fell asleep with him in one bed and then snuck back to the other bed. Halfway through the night, he woke up demanding my return. He was especially interested in the gigantic seagull that landed on our window sill each morning and thought is was great when the bird would call out to him. This morning, before we left, Papa fed the seagull a leftover cheese bun and we got to watch two gulls fight over it, rip it in half and each swallow their section whole. Bean didn't want to leave after that show.

So tomorrow we're back to the routine of life. Schmoo's back at preschool in the morning and Bean and I are off to the gym. We'll have a busy week getting organized for my friend K's visit next weekend. Gymnastics starts up again this week too -and cousin I is going to be in Bean's class with him and F, which will be lots of fun.
